Buying Your Home, the Origin Way

We interviewed our client, Grant Wylie, about his recent experience working with Origin SC. Check out this awesome success story!

Q. What was your first experience with Origin SC/how did you hear about us?
A. This was my first experience with Origin. I found them by doing an online search for down payment assistance programs in South Carolina and found out that they offered classes that could help me with that. Then I learned of Origin's other programs as well.

Q. Was the "Origin Way" of buying a home effective?
A. It was. They answered all of my questions along the way and helped me to understand the process. It went much easier than expected.

Q. Did you work with Origin Lending? If so, how was your overall experience with your Lending advisor, Stephanie Reed? Was she friendly, knowledgeable and helpful?
A. I did work with Origin Lending, both with Stephanie and Alex, before Alex moved. Both were fantastic and easy to communicate with.

Q. Did you benefit from the National Fair Housing Alliance fund? If so, how did the NFA fund help you successfully get into your home?
A. Yes, I did benefit from the NFA fund. Although I was prepared to move forward with the home purchase without the NFA assistance, having that financial assistance allowed me to make some much needed home repairs soon after purchase that I would have otherwise had to postpone.

Q. Did you work with Origin Realty? If so, how was that experience? Would you recommend them to others?
A. I did. Both Brad and Debbie listened to all my specific needs and worked with me through my search process, relieving much of the frustrations that can come from purchasing a first home.

Q. Do you have any additional comments or suggestions for our staff and the granting process?
A. I could not speak more highly of the Origin staff and all the help they provide. When I went to my first class with them I expected to learn the process of purchasing a home and planning for that to happen years from now. They helped me realize my dream much faster and I can't thank them enough.

Q. What would you say to a person that is thinking about buying a home?
A. It will probably be the most intense and at times stressful purchase you'll have made up to this point in your life.  But if you remain calm, follow the advice of the Origin staff, and remember they are there to make your dream a reality, they will get you where you want to go. When it's all over you'll feel a sense of pride in yourself that you did not know existed.

Buying Your Home, the Origin Way

Check out is awesome success story from our client, Jocelyn Chaviers.

"Today I paid rent for the last time!!! All thanks to Origin SC and their amazing team. I first came to Origin SC about a year ago for credit counseling. I never imagined a year later I would be a homeowner. I moved through the program step by step. I worked with Stephanie Reed, the Director of Lending Services. She walked me through the lending process. She educated me and helped me work through every hurdle with ease. After all my credit and finances were in order I started working with Debbie Kidd and her realty team to find my 1st home. They kept me on track and informed of the whole process! I received NFHA funds to help with my home purchase. I've always heard how stressful home buying can be but with ALL the help of the whole team, I did it! I just put my faith and trust in the process! I'm already singing the praises of ORIGIN SC to my friends and co-workers to take the first steps towards homeownership!"

Origin SC Helps to Open Day Center

Photo: Brad Nettles bnettles@postandcouriercom

The City of Charleston secured a large space at 529 Meeting Street that they will use as a Day Center. The Day Center is going to be a one stop shop where people experiencing homelessness and those that are at risk of homelessness can get connected to different services. Origin SC will be providing assistance with completing Representative Payee applications, budgeting and financial management counseling, housing stability program assistance, and FVIP programs. Some of the other agencies that will be participating will be the City of Charleston, We are Family, Charleston Dorchester Mental Health, MUSC, Pro Bono Legal Services, YWCA of Greater Charleston. Individuals will be able to get connected with services such as job skills, tutoring, arts education, basic computing, clinical counseling, health education, housing, etc.

The center opened on June 25th, 2018 and Origin SC counselors will be at the center every Tuesday and Thursday.
It's already almost that time of the year...back to school! Check out these helpful tips and tricks to learn how you can save some money this back to school season!

1. Make a list, and stick to it.
Consider which items are non-negotiable and make sure your money goes toward those items, not extra supplies that are not necessary. Teacher supply lists can be daunting enough as it is, so stick to that and don't waste time and money on unwanted items.

2. Check out supermarkets for basic supplies.
Save money, as well as gas and time, buy getting your grocery shopping and school supply shopping done at the same time. Check your weekly circulars for great deals on pens, pencils, and loose-leaf paper.

3. Sweep your home for supplies.
Whether you know it or not, it's possible that you might already have plenty of school supplies lying around your house. So start rounding up all of the office and school supplies that you already own. Check closets, desk drawers, etc. for supplies-- you never know what you might find! Once you have done your sweep, check off what you already have from your list before you go shopping and buy things you don't need.

4. Hit up the Dollar Store.
These stores are known for their bargains! You can buy basic supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, calculators. etc. You can start shopping at these stores earlier in the summer and get some of your shopping out of the way ahead of time, because they are always offering low prices.

5. Try online shopping.
Often, you can save money on school supplies and back-to-school clothes by shopping online. Sign up to receive emails from stores to find out when their daily/weekly sales are. Companies often offer better prices online than in their physical stores. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for inexpensive delivery options. Doing this will save you time, gas, and money.

6. Get creative!
Almost all schools require that books are covered with a protective layer. Instead of spending money on decorative book covers at the store, get creative with supplies that you probably already have. Some options include wallpaper, wrapping paper, newspaper, paper bags, etc. These kinds of covers provide a blank canvas for kids to display their artistic skills.

7. Let the kids chip in.
If your child has a piggy bank with birthday, Christmas or allowance money in it, let them contribute to school supply shopping. Maybe you already got them everything from their required list, but now they want a pencil case with their favorite movie character on it. Let them purchase that with their own money. It will teach them about money management and give them the feeling of accomplishment knowing that they bought that themselves with their own money (or at least chipped in a little bit for it!).

Origin SC May 2018 Newsletter

Check out what's new and exciting at Origin SC this month!
May 2018

Buying Your Home, the Origin Way

We interviewed our clients, Kenny and Charlene Ford, about thier recent success with purchasing a home with Origin SC:

Q: Was the "Origin Way" of buying a home effective? Was it helpful to have all services available in-house?
A. "We believe that the "Origin Way" of buying a home was very effective. We had never bought a home before and everyone gave us a clear timeline on how the process was going to be so we knew exactly what to expect."

Q: What was our experience like working with Origin Realty?
A: "We had a great experience with Origin Realty. We got constant reassurance on every aspect of the buying process. The process of buying a home can be a little bumpy, but our realtors were there with us every step of the way."

Q: How was your overall experience with your Lending Advisor, Stephanie Reed? Was she friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful?
A:"We had a great experience with Stephanie Reed. She collected our initial information when matching us with a lender and she also assisted with preparing the Origin funds. She was clear and concise throughout the process."

Q: How did the NFA fund help you successfully get into your home?
A: "The National Fair Housing (NFA) fund was very beneficial to our family. It took a huge chunk out of the cost that we would have been responsible to make the purchase. The fund truly allowed us to afford our home."

Q: What would you say to a person that is thinking of buying a home?
A. "We would tell anyone buying a home for the first time to use Origin SC. Origin SC treats you like a real person, not a number. The staff helps you through the process and clears up all steps in the home buying process. Everyone is always available to answer any qusetion you may have. We would recommend Origin SC to any and everyone (and we already have!)."

One Less Homeless Veteran

Join Origin SC in raising funds to help our local veterans.

Origin SC is raising funds to help local Veterans. Many local veterans are moving into housing with little more than what they're wearing at the time of the move. Origin's One Less Homeless Vet program was established in 2013 to expand services to Veterans after they obtain permanent housing. Origin's OLHV program raises funds to purchase new furniture, household items, kitchen supplies, and personal items for each eligible Veteran to help them make their house into a home. Origin can't provide these items without support from generous community partners like you. Each donation goes directly to purchase items for a veteran who has met all of Origin's screening requirements and has assembled a wish list of essential items. This Memorial Day fundraising drive runs from May 21 to Flag Day June 14, 2018.

How YOU can donate to help a local Veteran:
  1. Visit the website www.originsc.org/OLHV
  2. Click on the box that reads: GIVE TODAY
  3. Enter your information (secure through the South State Bank and Click & Pledge Platform)
  4. Don't forget to mention how you heard about us!
